What to expect from the 2025 Political Calendar…
Some of the biggest stories from history resurface for a new chapter in 2025. From a number of high profile elections to key anniversaries and international summits, this year brings a number of important events that will mark the beginning of brand-new chapters in our global political climate.

2025 Political Events – January
20-24 January 2025: World Economic Forum Annual Meeting
Returning once again to its hometown of Davos, Switzerland, the 2025 annual political meeting of the World Economic Forum will take place today.
20 January 2025: Inauguration of US President
Today, the winners of the 2024 United States presidential election are scheduled to be inaugurated as President and Vice President of the United States.
2025 Political Events – February
9 February 2025: Ecuadorian General Election
Voters in Ecuador will vote today to elect a new President of Ecuador, as well as members of the National Assembly.
The new National Assembly and President of Ecuador will serve a four-year term. Incumbent President, Daniel Noboa, running for re-election.
If no candidate gets over 50% of the vote (or gets over 40% of the vote and is 10 points ahead of their nearest rival), a second round of voting will take place on 13 April 2025.
14-16 February 2025: Munich Security Conference
The 61st edition of Munich Security Conference (MSC) will take place from February 14-16 2025 at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich.
Senior decision makers and thought leaders will gather from around the world to engage in high-level debates on the world’s most pressing security challenges.
24 February 2025: 3 Years since Russia Invaded Ukraine
Three years ago today, Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, a crisis that has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths on both sides and had global effects on food shortages and economic stability.
Since the invasion began, over 10 million Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes in what has been the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. It also prompted the biggest emigration of Russian nationals since the 1917 October Revolution.
2025 Political Events – March
8 March 2025: International Women’s Day
Another key focal point in the movement for women’s rights, International Women’s Day was first celebrated in its modern form in 1977, when it was officially adopted by the UN (although it has been commemorated in some countries since the early 20th century). The day is observed in a variety of ways in different parts of the world – from being a public holiday in some nations, to being a day of protest and/or a celebration of womanhood in others.
The campaign theme for 2025 is #AccelerateAction which will focus on “speeding up women’s equality” through collective activism.

2025 Political Events – April
7 April 2025: World Health Day
World Health Day draws attention to core priorities in global health. Numerous events are organised to educate the public and decision-makers about specific health issues.
From its inception at the First Health Assembly in 1948 and since taking effect in 1950, there is a specific theme dedicated each year.
19 April 2025: 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution
250 years ago, in 1775, the conflict that would lead to the independence of the United States began, marking a pivotal moment in global history.
King George declared Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion in February 1775 and ordered the arrest of the rebels’ leaders, leading to the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775.
26 April 2025: White House Correspondents Association Dinner
The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) holds its annual dinner. The WHCA is an organisation of journalists whom cover the White House and the president of the United States, though they operate as an independent body.
The WHCA dinner, designed to raise money for scholarships, has long been one of D.C.’s highest profile gatherings of insiders, media personalities and public officials.
30 April 2025: 50th Anniversary of the End of the Vietnam War
Saigon fell 50 years ago today, marking the official end of the Vietnam War and the unification of Vietnam under communist control.
2025 Political Events – May
1 May 2025: International Workers Day
Also known as May Day, this event is a global observance dedicated to workers’ rights and the International Labour Movement.
It originated in the late 19th century as a day of protest for better working conditions. Today is a day for workers to advocate for their rights and celebrate their achievements worldwide.
1 May 2025: United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections will take place across England today.
All seats on all 21 county councils in England and ten unitary authorities in England will be up for election. They will be the first local elections following the 2024 general election.
The inaugural election for the Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire is expected to take place, along with the inaugural election for the Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire.
12 May 2025: Philippine General Election
Voters in the Philippines will vote to elect all 317 seats in the House of Representatives and 12 of the 24 seats in the Senate.
Local elections will also take place across the country.
17 May 2025: Eurovision Song Contest Finals
The Finals of this year’s Eurovision song contest will take place in St. Jakobshalle, Basel, Switzerland on May 17th, with Semi-Finals on the 13th and the 15th.
Switzerland won the contest in 2023, with the song “The Code” by Nemo.

18 May 2025: Polish Presidential Election
Voters in Poland will vote to elect the 7th President of Poland.
Incumbent president Andrzej Duda is ineligible for re-election due to having already served two terms.
24 May 2025 (TBC): Australian Federal Election
Voters in Australia will vote to elect members of the 48th Parliament of Australia.
All 150 seats in the House of Representatives and likely 40 of the 76 seats in the Senate will be contested.
The election will need to be held on or before 27 September 2025, although a May election is expected.
19 May 2025: 78th World Health Assembly
Assembles for the annual World Health Assembly for the 78th time, at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of WHO. It is attended by delegations from all WHO Member States and focuses on a specific health agenda prepared by the Executive Board.
2025 Political Events – June
9-13 June 2025: UN Ocean Conference
The 2025 UN Ocean Conference will take place in Nice, France.
The conference will bring together governments, international bodies, and local communities to discuss how to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.
16-18 June 2025 (TBC): G7 Summit
The G7 will gather for their annual summit, where they will discuss major issues such as climate change, inequality, and security. This will be the 51st annual G7 Summit, and will take place in Kananaskis, Alberta under Canadian presidency.
Speaking on the summit, Canadian Prime Minister, Just Trudeau, has said that the summit will be “focused on delivering fairness for every generation and making life better for everyone.”
20 June 2025: World Refugee Day
The purpose of today is to raise awareness on the global issue and situation of refugees. Many stand in solidarity with refugees today and join the movement by getting involved.
This day promotes empathy, support, and action to address the global refugee crisis.
2025 Political Events – July
1 July 2025 (TBC): Bulgaria to Adopt the Euro
Bulgaria is expected to adopt the euro and become the 21st member state of the eurozone.
In accordance with the 2005 EU accession treaty, Bulgaria committed to switching its currency, the lev, to the euro, when it joined the European Union in 2007.
The transition will occur once the country meets all the euro convergence criteria.
24 July 2025: 2025 The Hague Summit (NATO)
The next NATO Heads of State and Government meeting will take place in 2025 in The Hague, Netherlands. The summit will define the security challenges facing the Alliance and outline the political and military tasks NATO will carry out to address them.
While the agenda is yet to be confirmed, concerns are likely to focus on the potential threats of China, Russia, and new military technological advancements. It is likely to build on discussions had in the 2024 Washington D.C. Summit.
2025 Political Events – September
9-23 September 2025: UN General Assembly (UNGA 80)
The 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80) will take place at the New York City headquarters this year, opening on the 9th September, with high-level General Debate commencing on the 23rd.
The sessions will, amongst other things, include votes on peace and security, and budgetary concerns. This marks the beginning of the regular sessions in which the Assembly attends between September and December each year (and thereafter until all issues are addressed).
Presidency is rotated on a yearly basis, and this year’s president will take over from Philémon Yang, the former prime minister of Cameroon.
28 September 2025: German Federal Election
Voters in Germany will vote to elect the members of the 21st Bundestag.
2025 Political Events – October
01 October 2025: Defenders’ Day in Ukraine
Defenders Day in Ukraine honours and pays tribute to all those who have fought and continue to fight for the state sovereignty of Ukraine. Before 2023, the event was celebrated on 14 October each year. However, a calendar reform has moved the event to October 1.
This day should provide an opportunity to remember those that have been lost in the ongoing crisis, as well as commemorate the bravery of those who continue to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty.
20 October 2025 (TBC): 45th Canadian Federal Election
Voters in Canada will vote to elect members of the House of Commons to the 45th Canadian Parliament.
The election may occur before the scheduled date if the governor general dissolves Parliament for a snap election, or if the House of Commons passes a motion of no confidence in the government.
24 October 2025: United Nations Day (80th Anniversary)
This day marks the anniversary of the creation of the United Nations in 1945.
This was accomplished when the UN Charter – its founding document – was ratified by the majority of the signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council. Today is celebrated with meetings, discussions and exhibits on the numerous achievements and goals of this global organisation.

2025 Political Events – November
1 November 2025 (TBC): Honduras General Election
Voters in Honduras will vote to elect the President, members of the National Congress and 20 members of the Central American Parliament.
23 November 2025 (TBC): Singaporean General Election
General elections are due to be held in Singapore no later than 23 November 2025.
The elections will determine the composition of the 15th Singaporean Parliament. The elections will be the 14th since the country’s independence.
For the first time since the 2006 general election, Lee Hsien Loong will not be leading the governing People’s Action Party (PAP), after being succeeded by Lawrence Wong as Prime Minister on 15 May 2024.
23 November 2025: Chilean General Election
Voters in Chile will vote to elect members of the National Congress and the President.
Incumbent president Gabriel Boric is ineligible to seek a second consecutive term in line with the 1980 constitution.
November 2025 (TBC): South Africa G20 Summit
The G20 hosts their 20th Heads of State and Government Summit under South African presidency. The summit will look back on the work that the G20 has done over the year and discuss their visions for the future, bringing together the world’s major economies to tackle key global issues.
The theme of South Africa’s G20 Presidency is still to be announced.
The G20 members account for more than 80% of world GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the population of the planet.
